Since bringing the Land Rover Discovery to the shores of North America in the late 1980's it enjoyed tremendous success compared to other Land Rovers that made the trip over. It was priced lower than the upperscale Range Rover and was ready to hit the trails as well which resonated with the US and Canadian market. In 2005 it came time to update the Discovery and the Land Rover LR3 was born. With plenty of competition in the luxury SUV market, Land Rover knew they needed a fresh look.
The Land Rover LR3 became hugely popular with women as a vehicle to tote the kids around from school, to sports practice and back home and is indeed much cooler than a minivan. With the new name came a whole list of refinements and improvements making the Land Rover LR3 more of a new vehicle than it is an update of an older model.
What can you say about a vehicle like the Land Rover LR3? It's an impressive vehicle, both on and off the road and is as much a city cruiser as it is an off-road vehicle. It's luxurious on the inside, has a bold design yet can climb through mud and water or over rough terrain as if it was a first generation Land Rover from the 1940's. With a powerful 300 hp V8 engine and 6 speed automatic transmission it can provide plenty of power on the highway for passing yet brings plenty of torque if needed on rough terrain. It has superior handling and lets the driver stay in control at all times with it's many systems that help to stabilize the vehicle and provide traction.
The ride quality can be described as firm, but comfortable so if you were looking for a cushy ride, you better look at a Range Rover. It's not bumpy by any stretch, but it's not a limousine either. The fully independent suspension provides a fairly smooth ride on the road and gives plenty of flexibility offroad.
The Land Rover LR3 comes in 2 trim level – SE and HSE. They are both the same mechanically, but the HSE adds a whopping 540 watt sound system where the SE gets the 240 watt system. With the larger sound system comes a navigation system as well which displays information about the vehicle as well. The seats in the LR3 are comfortable for long drives and provide plenty of support and the seats come covered in a nice, soft leather as standard equipment. A handy feature allows the driver to lower the suspension from a remote, making it easier to get into the LR3 as it sits quite high off the ground.
The downside of the LR3 of course comes in the fuel economy, with just 12mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway and premium gas is recommended. Of course you can dress up your purchase with Land Rover LR3 accessories that can add functionality to this vehicle, although it's equipped quite nicely from the factory.
